About My Art

Sometimes a spectacular sunrise or sunset captures my imagination. Storms sweeping the desert change sunny, clear blue skies into a vivid palette of colors, worthy of a great master painter.

No matter where I roam, I always carry a sketchbook, drawing tools and paints as well as a camera. If I have time, a value sketch is essential to capture the mood, the darks and the lights, and the design for a painting. A photo, while helping to capture the striking emotion of the moment, does not do justice to creating a wonderful painting later.

For many of the paintings when I incorporate gold, silver or copper leaf, the images from nature percolate in my imagination for days or weeks, before I can produce a painting based on the principles of Japanese painting, the art of mounting the leaf and the wonderful array of modern watercolors or acrylics onto the surface for the work of art.
